The highly anticipated Colombo International Book Fair threw its gates open to readers today (27 September), inviting book readers from all over the country to the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), Colombo. Hosted by the Sri Lanka Book Publishers' Association each year, the fair has evolved to become one of Sri Lanka's biggest and most popular cultural events, attracting tens of thousands of readers annually.
Operating through to 6 October, the fair will be open seven days a week from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm, allowing visitors plenty of time to dive into a world of books, learning, and imagination.
What so many love about the Colombo International Book Fair is the sheer diversity it has to offer. From classics of fiction and verse to new books in research, education, film, and children's literature, the fair has thousands of books to appeal to every reader and every interest. Most of these books come at special promotions, so it is not only a cultural experience but a readers' haven as well.
Adding to the thrill of it all, the fair will feature book launches, meet-and-greet sessions with authors, and interactive activities, providing book lovers the opportunity to interact one-on-one with some of their best-loved authors and publishers. For scholars and researchers, the event is an open forum to find academic material that may not be readily available otherwise. For families, it's a chance to invite young minds to enter the enchanted realm of books.
In an effort to get the fair more accessible, organizers have coordinated special bus facilities so that readers from every corner of Colombo and even elsewhere can visit without inconvenience.
The Colombo International Book Fair has gained a reputation over the years not only as a book bazaar but as a celebration of ideas, culture, and community sentiment. This year will again carry on that tradition, reaffirming the book's role in moulding minds, providing space for dialogue, and encouraging creativity.
With the corridors of BMICH alive with the sound of page-turning and the thrill of discovery, Colombo International Book Fair 2025 promises to be a cherished event for all book lovers in Sri Lanka.
